Sad Trip to an ELCA College

“A Lutheran college loses its religion....

If you go to youtube and type in 'Freshman Orientation at Gustavus' you will find two five minute videos showing the vile sex skits to which Gustavus Adolphus College Freshman are exposed at orientation. Gustavus is a college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the most liberal branch of American Lutheranism. I visited the campus today and walked past the chaplains' offices and the offices of the religion professors, wondering what I would see on their doors. A picture of Jesus or a Bible verse? None of that. Instead I saw signs saying 'Gay safe zone' and 'Hate free zone'. One religion prof showed a rainbow sticker and a sign 'My Karma ran over your dogma'. One door had a posting for feminist theology, another door or two displayed images from Eastern religions. As I was perusing the doors, an Asian religion professor was talking to a student about the different kinds of meditation. Nothing of Jesus. This is a Lutheran college of the ELCA. Please pray.

Forget football, basketball, and baseball. ELCA Lutheran colleges (next-door ELCA neighbors Gustavus and St. Olaf, for example) can start competing for the title of Most Apostate, World-Pleasing ELCA Lutheran College.

Areas of competition would include the likes of these:

1. Most Libertine Campus

Gustavus has its raunchy sex skits to debauch incoming freshmen. St. Olaf College has its Condom Olympics [ https://www.facebook.com/events/312823768764857/ ]. Other ELCA colleges must be fairly salivating at the me-too hedonistic events they might institute with their college administrations’ blessing.

2. Most Diverse (i.e., non-Christian) Religion Department

Tom Brock has reported on some of the Gustavus religion faculty's eclecticism. In 2007, St. Olaf appointed a Hindu professor as head of its religion department. In a writing for the World Council of Churches (bonus apostasy points if your article is accepted by the WCC), he called biblically based Christians naive. He wrote, "It is only ignorance of other traditions or the refusal to be challenged by their claims which enables one to explain away religious pluralism by the naive conclusion that one’s own tradition is true to the nature of God and that all others are false.” In an interview with Hinduism Today, he wrote, “. . . while everyone has a right to invite others to an understanding of their faith, no one has the right to violate others’ rights and religious sensibilities. At the same time, all should heal themselves from the obsession of converting others."

The ELCA has surely come to endorse that call to I’m-OK-you’re-OK universalism, but somebody needs to pass the news on to Jesus. He still claims to be the only way to eternal salvation.

3. Most Separated From Biblical Christianity

In June 2007, a spokesman for the CCCU (Council for Christian Colleges and Universities) noted that St. Olaf, even though it describes itself as affiliated with the ELCA Lutheran denomination, would not qualify for membership in CCCU. “We have this expectation that they [member schools] have to hire as full-time faculty and administrators only persons who profess faith in Christ,” said Nate Mouttet, CCCU’s assistant vice president for marketing and communication.

What a bummer that’d be. Biblical Christianity is so embarrassingly outré at Gustavus, St. Olaf, and other ELCA Lutheran colleges. Hawking Eastern religions, advocating anything-goes sexuality, and peddling peace-and-justice “Christianity” are where it’s at for today’s thoroughly postmodern ELCA pedagogue.

At this point I think there is really very little I could add to the discussion. I can only say, as a Lutheran/Catholic, that I experienced the same thing as Pastor Tom Brock -- walking through the halls of a Catholic University Theology Department, reading the signs, looking at the cartoons, etc. on my professors' office doors. (I lasted only one semester before I was expelled for not conforming to the "school of thought" of the Department.) What I am trying to say is that this problem is not exclusive to the ELCA.

In my view, these academic intellectuals have succumbed to the Spirit of the World, to put it mildly and not use a stronger term like "demonic influences."

I will agree that the ELCA/Lutherans are not the only church body/denomination that is dealing with leaders and churches straying from the "truth". there is an org called Association for Church Renewal which is basically an informal group of organizations that are working to try and reform their denominations that I understand get together on occasion to "compare" notes

The handwriting's on the wall. The ELCA's lampstand has been taken away; she has lost her first love, Jesus Christ, and is now a tool of antichristic forces. Small wonder an ELCA theologian dismissed Revelation as a mere warning, not Scriptural truth.

Jesus Christ is knocking on the door of the ELCA, but too few people are heeding His voice and leaving it. The leaders are blindly leading their sheep towards the long, slow path to perdition. And when these false teachers stand before the Great White Throne, they will receive many stripes. For they worship the Lord with their lips, but their hearts are far from Him. All gods are their god, which means the true God is not their god, as He will not share His Godhood with false gods which are at best nonexistent, or at worst the demon servants of Satan.

Dear Christian friends in the ELCA, please wake up and either courageously fight against your apostate leaders by voting yourselves out from their control, or vote with your feet and pocketbook to starve the beast. On Higgins Road, Jesus has left the building, shoved out by the very people who were sworn to serve Him. ELCA leaders, repent lest ye perish! Return to the Lord your God!

My son, was a much loved Prof at Gustavus for 15 years (Chair of Geography Dep't) but found the prevailing attitude increasingly hostile toward faculty who were sincere followers of Jesus and His Word. Our grandson, a high school student who excelled in Math and Sciences, took college courses on campus the last couple years and we see him wearing the "evolution, karma and Marxist" labels, bringing us to a heavy burden of prayer for him. The young think it is cool and fall in with what is popular. Meanwhile, our son accepted a teaching position this fall at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI and already is experiencing a totally different and more enthusiastic and joyful attitude among faculty and students. There comes a time when we must leave these institutions that are sucking the life out of us. We must learn to be discerning and diligent in our own spiritual life to know when God is telling us it is time to move on. In America we may face ridicule and scorn for our decisions, but our Christian brothers and sisters in many places in the world are facing torture, rape and death for their faith in Jesus. I pray for their comfort of the Holy Spirit and ask that I will be strong in the day of trial, which I believe is coming. May Jesus Christ be praised and glorified in us..

Hello everyone.

As a St Olaf student and full Christian Bible believer, I have found that St Olaf has increasing hatred towards me and what I believe. We are taught in our "religion" classes that Christians are hateful, hypocritical, sexist, and racist. We are taught that Christian beliefs were responsible for the Holocaust and the extermination of Native Americans. They tell us that much of the Bible is fiction; in particular, they teach that Ezekiel and Paul were mentally insane, Exodus never happened, and Matthew, Mark, and John never actually were followers of Jesus. It's incredible that this college still says it is a "Christian" college. The hatred I've received from students because of my beliefs is more than I've ever had before. Please pray that the actions of this college will come to light.
