The Bible vs. ELCA

Exposing the ELCA using God's written word.
(Below you will find what the bible says about  - The Truth and Authority of Scripture - Universal Salvation - Homosexuality - Prophecy, Jesus and Scripture - Is the ELCA teaching False Doctrine?)

Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. - Ephesians 5:11

The Truth and Authority of Scripture

The ELCA believes the Bible is full of errors and their teachings, actions and view of Scripture show that they deny God's hand was in the writing of it.   They teach that Hell is not real and that many of the stories in Scripture are made-up.  They do not believe the Bible is inerrant.  This allows the ELCA to elevate their thoughts, opinions and desires over the "inspired" words of the Bible.  The ELCA is also fond of denying what the Bible says but finding their own "spiritual truth" in it.   Also see, ELCA Exposed News on the Bible

The Bible says. . .

2 Peter 1: 20-21 -  "But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of ones own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God."

John 10:35 -  (Jesus said)  ". . .the Scripture cannot be broken."

Matt. 5:17,18 -  (Jesus said) "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.  I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished."

Proverbs 30:5-6 -  Every Word of God is flawless; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.
Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar.

Luke 16:17 -  (Jesus said) ". . . It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law."

John 17:17 -  (Jesus said) "Set them apart in the truth; your word is truth."

Matt. 22:29 -   "Jesus answered them, 'You are deceived, because you don’t know the scriptures or the power of God.'"

Psalms 138:2 -  I will bow down toward your holy temple and will praise your name for your love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word.

Hebrews 1:1-4  -  Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God— the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures regarding his Son, who as to his earthly life was a descendant of David, and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 -  All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work.

Isaiah 40:8 -  The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever.

Hebrews 4:12 - Indeed, the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Matthew 4:4 - Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"

Psalms 119:105 - Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

James 1:21-25 -  Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does.

John 8:31-32  - So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him,  "If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

Galatians 1:6-9 - I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—not that there is another gospel, but there are some who are confusing you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should proclaim to you a gospel contrary to what we proclaimed to you, let that one be accursed! As we have said before, so now I repeat, if anyone proclaims to you a gospel contrary to what you received, let that one be accursed!

Joshua 1:7-9 -  "Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.  Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.  Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go."

Psalm 19:9-11 - The decrees of the LORD are firm, and all of them are righteous.  They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb.  By them your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward.

Ephesians 5:6-8 - Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be partners with them. For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.

1 Timothy 4:13-16 - Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching.  Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you.  Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

Acts 17:11 - Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.

Jeremiah 23:29 - “Is not my word like fire,” declares the LORD, “and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?

1 John 2:3-6 - We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands.  Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person.  But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him:  Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.

Luke 16:31 - “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”

Thessalonians 2:13 - And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe.

Titus 2:1 - You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine.

Jude 1:3 - Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people.

Psalm 119:160 - All your words are true; all your righteous laws are eternal.

1 Corinthians 2:13 - This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.

Proverbs 3:1-2 - My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity.

Peter 2:15-16 - Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him.  He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.

Psalm 119:103 - How sweet are your words to my taste; sweeter than honey to my mouth

(There are hundreds of verses I could give you, and I will continue to add more.  The articles directly below contain a lot of scripture references.)

The Inspiration of Scripture

. . .So God breathed into them the very words that He wanted them to write. And by some miraculous supernatural indescribable means, they wrote down exactly what God wanted said which isn't difficult if you're God. He can certainly accomplish that. The actual process can't be described, it is miraculous. It can't be defined, it is supernatural. . .

Jesus and the Inspiration of Scripture

On many other occasions, Jesus cited Scripture as a "proof text" while debating His adversaries. During the wilderness temptation, Jesus quoted Old Testament texts in opposition to Satan (Matt. 4:4, 7, 10). Elsewhere, Jesus responded to His detractors by asking them, "Have you not read. . . ?" "It is written. ...", or a similar comment, also served to refute an opposing view. In Matthew 22:29, Jesus remarked that an ignorance of Scripture caused the Sadducees to a make a theological error . . .

Scripture’s Claims for Itself

. . .When in conversation with the Jewish leaders of that day as recorded in John 10, Jesus quotes from the O.T. saying, “It is written…” and when he does, he considers the case closed. “It is written” is his constant usage from the time of his temptation until after his resurrection. Constantly, he quotes from all parts of the O.T. . .
. . . Christ quoted all parts of the Scripture alike: The Law – the Prophets – and the Writings as the Word of God. He didn’t just quote from one section and leave out the others, but he quoted from the three great sections as equally the Word of God. Points especially contested and attacked in modern times are given by Christ as accepted without question. These include:
  • the Mosaic authorship of the Pentateuch – including Leviticus
  • the creation
  • the giving of the Law on Mt. Sinai
  • the flood
  • the history of Abraham and God’s Covenant with him
  • the prophecy of Daniel
  • the historical books
  • that Jonah spent three days in the great fish. . .

The Inspiration of the Bible

The clear intent of the Old Testament writers was to convey Gods message. Consider first that God was said to speak to the people. "God says" (Deut. 5:27), "Thus says the Lord" (Exod. 4:22), "I have put my words in your mouth" (Jer. 1:9), "The word of the Lord came to him" (Gen. 15:4; 1 Kings 17:8). All these references to God speaking show that He is interested in communicating with us verbally. The Old Testament explicitly states 3,808 times that it is conveying the express words of God. . .

Jesus Christ on the infallibility of Scripture

. . . Although some religious leaders profess to accept Scripture as ‘God’s Word,’ their low view of ‘inspiration’ belies the fact. They believe and teach that Scripture is, to a very significant degree, man’s word. Many of their statements are in essential disagreement with those of Jesus Christ. From the evidence of their books, we conclude that some Christian leaders are opposite to Christ in His regard for the authority, the inspiration, and the inerrancy of Scripture. . .

Embracing Christ’s View of Scripture

. . .We never find Jesus appealing to a higher authority to bring out some “hidden meaning” of Scripture. Jesus indicates that the Scriptures are essentially perspicuous (clear for the nonscholar to understand). Eleven times the Gospel writers record Him saying, “Have you not read . . . ?”1 and thirty times He defended His teaching by saying, “It is written.”2 He rebuked His listeners for not understanding and believing what the text plainly says. . .

Universal Salvation

The ELCA leadership and seminaries are leading the denomination into the belief that "everyone is saved." (see ELCA Exposed News on Universal Salvation) Is this true?  Will everyone be saved?

The Bible says . . .

Revelation  20:15 - And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.

Revelation 21:8 -But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.

2 Thessalonians 1:5-10 - All this is evidence that God's judgment is right, and as a result you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering.  God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well.  This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels.  He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.  They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of his power on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony to you.

John 3:36 - Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him.

Matt 25:46 - Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.

Romans 10:9-10 -  That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

John 3:16-18 -  For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

John 1:12 -  But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.

Romans 3:21 - But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe.

Daniel 12:1-2 - Now at that time Michael, the great prince who stands guard over the sons of your people, will arise. And there will be a time of distress such as never occurred since there was a nation until that time; and at that time your people, everyone who is found written in the book, will be rescued. Many of those who sleep in the dust of the ground will awake, these to everlasting life, but the others to disgrace and everlasting contempt.

2 Peter 2:4,9 - For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment...then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment.

John 8:24 - Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.

Mark 3:28–29 - Truly I say to you, all sins shall be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they utter; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin.

Matthew 12:32 - Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.

Matt. 7:13-14 - Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide, and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and many are those who enter by it. For the gate is small, and the way is narrow that leads to life, and few are those who find it,

Matt. 22:14 - For many are called, but few are chosen,

Luke 13:22-27 - Then Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching as he made his way to Jerusalem. Someone asked him, "Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?"  He said to them, "Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to. Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside knocking and pleading, 'Sir, open the door for us.'  "But he will answer, 'I don't know you or where you come from.'  "Then you will say, 'We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.'  "But he will reply, 'I don't know you or where you come from. Away from me, all you evildoers!'

If No One Is Lost, Then the Mission of Christ Was a Waste of Time

. . .Jesus defined His mission by saying, “The Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost” (Luke 19:10). He didn’t simply say that He came to save the lost, but that He came to seek and to save them. That is, before the lost can be redeemed, they must first be found. . .

Is Universalism Biblical?

. . .The Scriptures consistently categorize people into one of two classes (saved/unsaved, also called believers/unbelievers), and portray the final destiny of every person as being one of two realities (heaven or hell). . .

Homosexuality, God's Intent and Scripture

The ELCA has endorsed the practice of homosexuality.  They do not call it a sin and they do not call people to repent of it.(also see ELCA Exposed News on Homosexuality)

The Bible Says . . .

Mark 10:6-9 -  "But at the beginning of creation God 'made them male and female.' 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.' So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."

Leviticus 18:22 -
Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable.

Leviticus 20:13 -  If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable.

Romans 1:26-27 -
Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11 -  Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Genesis 19:1-13 -  The two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city. When he saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground.  "My lords," he said, "please turn aside to your servant's house. You can wash your feet and spend the night and then go on your way early in the morning."
"No," they answered, "we will spend the night in the square."
But he insisted so strongly that they did go with him and entered his house. He prepared a meal for them, baking bread without yeast, and they ate.  Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom—both young and old—surrounded the house.  They called to Lot, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them."
Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him and said, "No, my friends. Don't do this wicked thing. Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don't do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof."
"Get out of our way," they replied. And they said, "This fellow came here as an alien, and now he wants to play the judge! We'll treat you worse than them." They kept bringing pressure on Lot and moved forward to break down the door.
But the men inside reached out and pulled Lot back into the house and shut the door.  Then they struck the men who were at the door of the house, young and old, with blindness so that they could not find the door.
The two men said to Lot, "Do you have anyone else here—sons-in-law, sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here,  because we are going to destroy this place. The outcry to the LORD against its people is so great that he has sent us to destroy it."

Matthew 10:14-15 -  If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town.  I tell you the truth, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.

Jude 1:6-7 -  And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home—these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day. In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.

Deuteronomy 23:17-18 -  No Israelite man or woman is to become a shrine prostitute.  You must not bring the earnings of a female prostitute or of a male prostitute into the house of the LORD your God to pay any vow, because the LORD your God detests them both.

Judges 19:22-24 -
While they were enjoying themselves, some of the wicked men of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they shouted to the old man who owned the house, "Bring out the man who came to your house so we can have sex with him."
The owner of the house went outside and said to them, "No, my friends, don't be so vile. Since this man is my guest, don't do this disgraceful thing.  Look, here is my virgin daughter, and his concubine. I will bring them out to you now, and you can use them and do to them whatever you wish. But to this man, don't do such a disgraceful thing.

Genesis 2:15-18, 21-25 -  The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.  And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;  but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die."
The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him."
So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh.  Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

    The man said,
"This is now bone of my bones
       and flesh of my flesh;
       she shall be called 'woman,'
for she was taken out of man."

For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.
The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.

Nashville Statement

. . .“Article 10
WE AFFIRM that it is sinful to approve of homosexual immorality or transgenderism and that
such approval constitutes an essential departure from Christian faithfulness and witness.
WE DENY that the approval of homosexual immorality or transgenderism is a matter of moral
indifference about which otherwise faithful Christians should agree to disagree.”. .

Judaism's Sexual Revolution God’s Plan for Sex

. . .That’s why Judaism’s claim that God created sex only for a man and a woman in marriage was so revolutionary — and despised by pagans ancient and modern pagans I might add as well. . .

Pro-Gay Theology: Does the Bible Approve of Homosexuality?

. . .some in the church have taken to reinterpreting key passages on homosexuality or even denying outright that these passages mean what they plainly say. So what exactly does the Bible say about homosexuality? And how do pro-gay Bible scholars try to work around those passages? . .

Prophecy, Jesus and Scripture

Prophecy, the Bible and Jesus

. . . How do you respond to someone's claim that the Bible is not inspired?  Is there a way to prove inspiration or, at least, intelligently present evidence for its inspiration? The answer is, "Yes!"  One of the best ways to prove inspiration is by examining prophecy. . . (details scripture from old testament and Jesus' fulfillment of it)

Is the ELCA teaching False Doctrine?

How do we know and how do we respond, if so?

The Bible says. . .

Romans 16:17 - Now I urge you, brethren, keep your eye on those who cause dissensions and offenses contrary to the teaching which you learned, and turn away from them.

Ephesians 5:6-8 - Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be partners with them. For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.

2 John 9-11 - Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him in your house and do not give him a greeting: for the one who gives him a greeting participates in his evil deed.

Jude 1:4 - For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.

Malachi 2:17 - You have wearied the Lord with your words. Yet you say, “How have we wearied him?” By saying, “All who do evil are good in the sight of the Lord, and he delights in them.”

Colossians 2:8 - See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ.

Matthew 15:8-9 - “‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.

They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.’”

False Teachers and Deadly Doctrines

. . .The Christian’s responsibility is clear: We are to learn God’s truth by searching God’s Word. We must carefully evaluate every teaching according to God’s unfailing standard. What passes the test is sound doctrine, and what fails the test is false doctrine. . .

The Five Tests of False Doctrine

. . .It is our sacred responsibility to examine every doctrine to determine if it is true or false. But how can we distinguish sound doctrine from false? How can we distinguish teachers of truth from teachers of error? . .
