Reader Responds to Article About ELCA Church Closing

"MarcC" nails it with his comment (posted below) to this article. The church he writes about is an ELCA church.

“The story dos not say which of the several Lutheran denominations in the USA St. Luke's once belonged to, but I am guessing the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America -- the liberal, "progressive" Lutherans. If St. Luke's was an ELCA congregation, it is no surprise at all that it closed, being reduced to about 30 members. The ELCA is the progressive culture-church most like the Episcopal Church, and the ELCA is hemorrhaging members, money and whole congregations with their buildings at an increasing rate over the past 10-15 years, having now lost nearly one million of what was once a 5 million member denomination. A whole new Lutheran denomination has come into being from expatriate ELCA churches and members (as well as politically incorrect seminary and college professors) and is flourishing: the North American Lutheran Church (NALC), The ELCA, since the 1990s, has endorsed abortion on demand; encouraged the use of contraceptives and birth control among middle-school and high school students with anonymity; embraced the agenda of radical feminism ; and now has embraced the LGBT agenda, normalizing homosexuality; adopted same-sex marriage ; ordains active and practicing, open homosexuals to the ministry. It is socially activist in left-wing radical ways.: The ELCA is increasingly authoritarian in its national governance and restrictive of regional and parish leadership. It has turned all of its seminaries into centers of political correctness (the NALC has established its own seminary staffed by booted professors who did not cave in to PC requirements, and will not allow any candidates for ordination to attend any ELCA seminary). So, you can expect to see many, many more ELCA churches close their doors or defect to the NALC while they still have a congregation. At least probably very affluent people will have a very cool building for their condo.”

Little Hope That the Slow Movement of the ELCA Toward Liberal Protestantism Will Abate

7/24/2015

(by Robert Benne. Posted on a Lutheran forum)

I found a good deal to agree with in the reflections on “After Schism” by my friend and colleague, Paul Hinlicky. My memories are still fresh of both of us standing outside the first ELCA Assembly in 1989 in Chicago, smoking cigarettes and fuming about what was happening therein, as well as of his dramatic gesture—he disgustedly threw a torn copy of The Lutheran from the pulpit in Boe Chapel at St. Olaf College--at one of the Called to Faithfulness Conferences in the early 90s. So we share a long period of resistance to the trends operating in the ELCA from its conception in the Committee for a New Lutheran Church. However, from 2009 onward we have taken different paths. As he makes clear in his article, he continues his tortured existence in the ELCA and in the new incarnation of CORE. I chose to shift my commitment and soon my membership to the North American Lutheran Church. I spiritually left the ELCA when it made its fateful decisions in 2009. Strangely, I found that defeat liberating—I no longer had to fight against something forever and ever, but rather could reorient my energies for something, first toward CORE in its earlier version and then toward the NALC, which it birthed.

I have served in several capacities in the NALC since its founding. For six years after those 2009 decisions we have continued to belong to an orthodox ELCA congregation, the same one to which Paul belongs, so I fully agree with him that there are genuine Lutheran Christians as well as orthodox Lutheran parishes remaining in the ELCA. But I see little hope that the slow movement of the ELCA toward liberal Protestantism will abate. Indeed, the path away from orthodoxy was dramatized by the election of a male bishop “married” to another man. So, after making a decision some years ago to cast my lot with the NALC, my wife and I will bring our local parish membership in line with that decision by joining St. John Lutheran in Roanoke when that parish joins the NALC in September.

As a member of the Commission on Theology and Doctrine of the NALC, I want to remonstrate a bit with Paul about several of his comments about the NALC. The first one concerns his chastising the NALC leadership for its “playing fast and loose with the truth in the process leading up to its now ‘pending’ application for membership in the Lutheran World Federation.” As he notes, one of the two reasons for wanting to join the LWF—against considerable resistance from many NALC parishes—was to respond positively to requests by African churches to help them stand for orthodoxy in the LWF. The other was to enter into world-level ecumenical conversations through the LWF.

One of the requirements for membership of a new body in the LWF is that the contiguous churches—the ELCA and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada—would have to give their approval. That didn’t happen so our application was put on “pending” status, with the accompanying question from the LWF about whether we would practice altar and pulpit fellowship with those churches. We replied that NALC parishes could and would practice such on an ad hoc basis. We knew there were orthodox ELCA pastors who could faithfully serve NALC parishes, and we had little doubt that NALC pastors could serve in orthodox ELCA parishes. Meanwhile, however, the ELCA has remained silent on the matter while a number of ELCA bishops have played a mean-spirited game of hardball. ELCA pastors who want to serve NALC parishes—even supply preach for them—have been threatened with expulsion from the ELCA. So, the truth is that there is far more hostility to pulpit and altar fellowship in the ELCA than in the NALC. The next step, as I understand it, is that the ELCA, ELCIC, and the NALC are supposed to have joint conversations on a number of issues before anything further can happen.

A second item concerning the NALC is Paul’s intimation that NALC cast CORE into outer darkness because it would not “play a stronger role in facilitating exodus from the ELCA” and therefore not help increase the growth of the NALC. The story is more complex than that. Under Steve Shipman the direction of CORE bent more and more toward remaining in the ELCA as a shelter for the orthodox and as a prophetic voice within the ELCA. Little energy was given to helping churches find their way out of the ELCA into the NALC. Meanwhile, the funds to support CORE were drying up and the NALC had to pick up the bill for some of CORE’ s functions, including the Theological Lectures held between its Convocation and the NALC Convocation. Since CORE had morphed back into a reform and renewal within the ELCA and has abjured its role in helping congregations leave, there is little reason for the NALC to subsidize the organization. However, CORE members continue to serve in various capacities in the NALC, including Paul himself in its planning committee for the newly-named Braaten and Benne Theological Lectures.

Third, Paul opines that if the NALC has dallied with the Navigators it can certainly relate to orthodox elements in the ELCA, the implication being that the NALC was theologically lax in its dalliance. Truth is, Bishop Bradosky received sharp criticism for his work with the Navigators from some pastors within the NALC. He assured them he was interested in some of the techniques of evangelism and discipleship practiced by the Navigators rather than its theology. Heavens knows Lutherans need to get better at both. To abate any fears the Commission asked Nathan Yoder to draft a paper on discipleship, which he has done in solid Lutheran fashion. It is currently being reviewed by retired Bishop Paull, Spring, David Yeago, and James Nestingen. Theology is taken seriously in the NALC.

One of the great opportunities in building a new church is that we have the chance to do things right. The first thing we have tried to do right is to make sure Lutheran theology provides the guidance system of the church, not fashionable ideologies that have so flummoxed the ELCA. That’s what happened with the Navigators episode. Further, we are trying to do public witness properly, avoiding the ponderous social statements and promiscuous political advocacy we enjoyed in the ELCA. Likewise, with evangelism, both at home and abroad, and with theological education, which is going to be held closely to the life and needs of the church.

Another of the benefits to building a new church is that one can orient energies toward the future and distance them from the battles of the past. That’s why I don’t recognize at all Paul’s suggestion that the NALC, along with the LCMS, is “forced perpetually to define themselves over against the heterodoxy of the feared other.” He might be right about the LCMS, which is always fighting among contending “feared others” within the church itself. But, as far as I have experienced the NALC, there is little dwelling on the battles of the past with the ELCA. The doctrine of marriage and the requirement that baptism is necessary for participating in the Eucharist are settled teachings. “Pioneer evangelism” (bringing the Gospel to lands and peoples who have never heard it) is accepted without any debate whatsoever. With the aid and blessing of the Holy Spirit, we want to move on to building a viable church not obsess about the past.

Further, I do not think the NALC proudly thinks “orthodoxy is something we own.” We are quite aware that all human formulations are marred by sin and finitude. As Paul asserts, “Orthodoxy is yet an unfinished project” in the sense that what is implicit in the Bible and the Great Tradition can become explicit through the promptings of the Holy Spirit. And new historical challenges have to be grappled with in ways that apply old truths in new ways. But there is an “apostolic faith,” a Great Tradition, a

“mere Christianity” that is settled and non-negotiable. The ELCA has denied at least two key doctrines of that apostolic faith: the Great Commission (it rejected “pioneer evangelism” in 1999); and the Christian doctrine of marriage (it has a male Bishop “married” to another man. Its doctrine will have to catch up with its practice.) More fundamentally, it submits doctrine to the manipulated decisions of a theologically and biblically uninformed assembly.

While I agree with Paul that God is working a shake-up of the Christian churches and perhaps realigning them anew in which denominational lines may be re-written or become obsolete, it’s a kind of Docetism that suggests that we can bracket church membership out of our lives at this point in history. As some Lutherans have argued, the church is included in the Gospel, and one simply has to take membership in a concrete body seriously. One cannot airily float above them all.

Finally, I do not think Paul has to worry about being “forced to shelter elsewhere.” The ELCA has no stomach for any forthright dismissals or heresy trials; it would much rather ignore you. Besides, who in the ELCA would be able to argue with the theologian who just finished a 1000-page systematic theology entitled Beloved Community—Critical Dogmatics after Christendom?

Jesus Has Left the Building: Former ELCA Churchwide Director Talks About Leaving the ELCA

1/13/2015

The Rev. Dr. Gemechis D. Buba is the former Director of African National Ministries of the ELCA. However in 2010, he resigned from his position and left the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America for good. Below is a word from Dr. Buba explaining his decision.

Dr. Buba was challenging his listeners to know that Jesus is calling them to himself, “Sometimes God calls you, but you don't know where he called you to . . . don't build relationship with institutions, build relationship with a Person. Don't build relationships with a religious system, build relationships with Jesus . . . (Jesus) call them (the disciples) to Himself. He did not call them to--that is what Luther got during the Reformation. That's why he said, 'Who are you, sitting in Rome, dictating over the Word of God? Who are you, Council of Cardinals, bishops and archbishops, snuffing out the Word of God? Declaring your authority above the Word of God? Who are you? You are just an institution.' He says 'I'm not going to stand and line up with an institution, I will walk with Jesus.'

The day I resigned from my position in the churchwide office in Chicago, my office was on the ninth floor. I sit on that floor and look down on O'Hare airport, and I was big, and I was earning, and I was just in a position in an institution. And Jesus, was standing down (pointing down, as in out a window), he was not on the ninth floor with me; he left that building. He left that institution. He left that organization. He was right there on the grass, and he was saying, 'Are you going to stay in the institution or follow me?' December 8th, 2010, I submitted my resignation, came down with an elevator and went to that field. Jesus and I went into my Jeep, and that day I did not drive, I flew. I went home. All the burden was gone.”

Jesus left the building. Jesus left the ELCA.

Rev. Dr. Gemechis D. Buba is now the Assistant to the Bishop for Mission for the NALC.

Important Pro-Life Week Met With Silence From ELCA

1/25/2013

The March for Life was held today in Washington D.C. “March for Life is an annual pro-life rally protesting abortion . . . (which takes place) on or around the anniversary of the United States Supreme Court's decision legalizing abortion in the case Roe v. Wade.” (see here)  It is the talk of the town on The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) Facebook page (see here).  They even posted a picture of Rev. John Bradosky, Bishop of the North American Lutheran Church (NALC) and LCMS President Harrison as they participated in the March. (see here)

For an event that had national Lutheran leaders participating, one would think the largest Lutheran denomination would find it newsworthy enough to send their leader, or at least address it; wouldn't you? I haven't seen any pictures or reports of ELCA leaders attending the March, and nothing was even said about it on the ELCA's official website or its Facebook page. NOTHING.

Not only that, this week as Christian denominations, organizations and individuals spoke, wrote and posted about the 40th anniversary of the legalization of abortion (Roe vs. Wade) on Facebook the ELCA and Women of the ELCA (WELCA) posted nothing. However, two days later something of such significance was taking place that WELCA had to address it. What was it you ask? National Handwriting Day. (see here – scroll down the page)

55 million unborn children have been killed in the last 40 years in the United States and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America doesn't even address the evil tragedy. That's because the evil tragedy of abortion is considered “good” in the ELCA. (see here)

Happenings With Confessional Lutheran Movement in WI

5/29/2011

I received this update from a friend.

Much is happening with the confessional Lutheran movement in Wisconsin.  Here are some highlights - please pray God's guidance and glory be demonstrated in each of these circumstances:
  • Pastor Mark Richardson, service coordinator for the Augustana District of Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ, held an educational session about LCMC at Grace Lutheran Church in Eau Claire May 8.  Nearly 90 people were in attendance.  Another education session was held Thursday night as that congregation continues to move forward.  You'll recall from earlier posts that Grace's council decided to affiliate the congregation with Lutheran Congregations in Missions for Christ two days after 56% of the congregation voted to extract itself from the ELCA (while an obvious majority, short of the 2/3 vote required to continue the disaffiliation process).  At present, Grace is dual rostered for ELCA and LCMC.  In the meantime, Grace has voted to withhold funding from ELCA, and continue to provide educational opportunities for the congregation about LCMC.  Northwest Wisconsin ELCA Bishop Duane Pederson has established a new congregation (officially a Synodically Authorized Worshiping Community) two blocks away from Grace.
  • Hope Lutheran Church of Ladysmith held its first vote to disaffiliate from the ELCA on Sunday, May 15.  The vote resulted in more than 85% favoring to leave the ELCA, more than the two-thirds majority required to continue the process.  The next step in the process will be a consultation with the Bishop Pederson.  After at least 90 days and that consultation, the congregation may hold a second vote.  If two-thirds or more again vote to leave and join another Lutheran organization at that time, the only ELCA congregation in Ladysmith will have removed itself from that organization.  Despite the fact the Hope is early in its process, Bishop Pederson has already authorized another Synodically Authorized Worshiping Community in Ladysmith, called Walking in Grace.  You may visit the website at http://walkingingraceelca.org/walkingingrace/.
  • This Sunday is another big day at Hope in Ladysmith, as it will ordain a daughter of the congregation.  Jody Becker invites anyone to attend her ordination at Hope at 3 p.m. on Sunday.  The Bishop of the North American Lutheran Church (NALC) Paull Spring will preside over the service.  Following the service, there will be a picnic in Hawkins, 20 miles east of Ladysmith.  Rev. Becker, who received her Master of Divinity degree from Luther Northwestern Seminary earlier this month, has been called to serve Bethel Lutheran Church of Hawkins and Bethany Lutheran Church of Catawba, which are associated both with NALC and LCMC after leaving the ELCA last month.  Rev. Becker has been serving both congregations while attending seminary for the past three years.
  • Peter Rimmereid, another recent Luther grad, will be ordained on Sunday, June 5 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bloomer (ELCA), his home congregation.  Two weeks later, Peter will be installed as pastor at Bethesda Lutheran Church (LCMC) in Dresser at it’s 10 a.m. service. The ordination Sunday will be the last in the pulpit at St. John’s for its long time pastor, Peter’s father Bruce Rimmereid.  Rev. Bruce Rimmereid announced his resignation from St. John’s after the congregation failed in its effort to extract itself from the ELCA in a vote last month.
  • There are new beginnings in Bloomer, however.   A new congregation is forming, initially from people who were members of St. Johns, but made the decision they could not stay with their congregation if it was staying in the ELCA.  They have held several organizational meetings, and have a steering committee dealing with key details, including incorporation and naming.  The as-yet-unnamed congregation will have its first worship at 6 p.m. Sunday, May 22 at the Bloomer Senior/Civic Center on Duncan Road.  Pastor Jerry Hibbard of Stanfold Lutheran in Rice Lake will be leading that initial worship.
  • There was a nice article in today's Eau Claire Leader Telegram newspaper about New Life Lutheran Church, the NALC congregation that began earlier this year in Menomonie after Bishop Pederson took action last fall to remove Rev. Roy Harrisville III and the church council at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Menomonie.  This link should work for awhile, if you'd like to read it:  http://www.leadertelegram.com/features/religion/article_f82f4353-7002-599e-bcc8-9d719c0a2b4c.html.
  • Calvary Lutheran Church of Brookfield became the first Milwaukee area ELCA church to leave the demonomination.  The story was reported in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.  http://www.jsonline.com/features/religion/122037484.html.
  • Faith Lutheran Mission Church, the first LCMC church in Eau Claire which formed in January of 2010, votes tomorrow on issuing a letter of call to its first pastor.
  • Please be in prayer for a conference coming up this weekend in Waupaca sponsored by Lutheran CORE (Coalition for Renewal) of Wisconsin.  The conference entitled “Strength for Today..Bright Hope for Tomorrow…the Journey of Discipleship” takes place Sunday 2-5:30 p.m.  The conference is for inspiration, learning, and mutual encouragement for all orthodox Lutherans in Wisconsin.
  • Our friends in the Twin Cities Area Chapter of WordAlone/Lutheran CORE are having an open meeting Thursday, May 26 featuring Dr. Hans Wiersma, Asst. Professor of Religion at Augsburg College.  Dr. Wiersma will speak on the subject, “Feathers and All: Luther, Lutherans and the Holy Spirit,” dealing with such questions as how Lutheran understanding of the Holy Spirit lines up with the Biblical witness, and to the understanding of others.  The event takes place at Roseville Lutheran Church, 1214 West Roselawn Avenue in Roseville.  If you’d like to learn more, call 612-889-5709, or e-mail wordalonespas@aol.com.
