This is telling - "Most white evangelical Protestants (73 percent), as well as 55 percent of white Catholics and 53 percent of black Protestants, say it is morally wrong to have an abortion. That compares with 36 percent of white mainline Protestants and just 20 percent of the religiously unaffiliated." (see here)

Most every member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America falls under the heading “white mainline Protestants.”

Three thoughts:

I haven't heard of any ELCA bishops publicly standing against abortion nor have I seen the denomination supporting any pro-life initiatives.
I had always believed the ELCA leadership to be pro-abortion (read here) but now I see that the majority of ELCA members also support the killing of children in the womb.
A pro-life supporter worshiping in an ELCA church is a lot like a pro-life supporter working for Planned Parenthood.

This comes from the ELCA worship planning resource “SUNDAYS AND SEASONS.” - “Gospel, 1st Advent: God will fulfill God's purposes and, already, hidden signs of that fulfillment abound. On that great day there will be dismay, perplexity, confusion, and terror, but God's people shall be given strength to stand boldly and receive God's promised redemption.”

Where are the pronouns? It seems like the resource is doing everything possible, in this instance, to avoid calling God “He.”

I thought the following video was worth posting. The hosts' answer a woman’s question, “Is it wrong in God's eyes to attend a church that doesn't follow the Bible?”

Here is part of their answer, “Are you born again? Seriously, are you a Christian? . . . Have you repented of your sins? Are you trusting in Jesus alone? Because if you are you will love God's word and you'll never ever support a church that is teaching error.”

Our LCMS church just observed "Right-to-Life Sunday", the next day our pro-abortion President was sworn in again, and today marks 40 years of Roe v. Wade. And I heard 70% of American adults want this law to stand, sadly.
As sad as this is to me, even overturning the decision would not stop the slaughter. Doctors would falsify records, and young women would cross borders or go to a black market. The hearts of Americans must be changed. Pray to God for those whom the Evil One has blinded, that they would return to the Lord because He is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. But we just keep on flying in His face, and something's gotta give. I grieved over Roe-v-Wade ever since it was enacted. And America's been slowly sliding towards a moral and spiritual cliff ever since. As a Lutheran, I'm not on board with the pre-Tribulation rapture crowd. But Jesus will come again someday...
Presently I see the persecution of the rapidly-growing Christian church in China, Africa and the Christian remnant in (sigh) post-Christian Europe. In Sweden, Christian homeschooling is illegal, Muslim converts to Christianity are denied asylum and forced back to their native couhtries. While 75% of native Swedes are baptized into the ostensibly Lutheran Church of Sweden, only 15% of these believe Jesus is Savior. And 15% are atheists who just have their kids baptized for tradition's sake. And in Great Britain, 66% of the people are atheists. In Italy, Jesus is number 8 on the list of those who are addressed in prayer. Can you believe consensual incest is now legal in much of Europe?
Looks like the beginning of a great apostasy and tribulation to me. I'm not saying the Day of the Lord is coming in my lifetime, but when He does come, will He find any faith on earth?

So the ELCA will continue to condone abortion and subsidize it in the self-funded ELCA employee health plan. Nothing new there.

The followers of Jesus Christ cannot sit idly by, though, while the counterfeit churches countenance and abet the killing of unborn babies.

Former abortion clinic director Abby Johnson writes in "Christians, Quit Being Apathetic and Stand Against Abortion":

". . . Being pro-life isn’t always pretty. And it’s not just about “saving babies.” It is about saving the person…the woman, the baby, the man involved, the family. It is sometimes about putting someone else’s needs above our own. It is about stepping out of the comfortable and moving into a place that is unfamiliar.

"Is it comfortable to talk about abortion? Not always. Do people always want to hear about it? Not usually. But silence breeds apathy, and that is what we are soaked in. APATHY. The greatest breeding ground for apathy seems to be in our churches. Why is that? It’s not like the sanctity of human life isn’t ALL OVER Scripture. It isn’t as if God didn’t make it pretty clear that life is sacred. We aren’t scared to talk about a slew of other “hot button” issues…but we tend to be silent on the number one issue that has invaded our churches.

"According to the Guttmacher Institute, seventy-two percent of women seeking abortions [ more than 3,200 abortions are performed every day] come from the church. I actually think that number is low. We [Johnson was director of a Planned Parenthood clinic in Bryan, Texas] performed very few abortions on women who proclaimed to be atheists or agnostic. No, many of them brought their Bibles and/or rosaries to their abortion appointments. Many would ask if we would pray with them before the abortion procedure began.

"APATHY. It is what keeps these church going women coming to the abortion clinics over and over again. The churches are silent. The majority of clergy are silent. And their silence is DEAFENING! By not speaking up they are telling those in their congregation who are suffering in silence that their sin of abortion is TOO BIG for God. That is a LIE. Clergy who are silent on this issue are not doing any one any favors. They are doing their congregation an incredible disservice. With seventy-two percent of abortions coming from the church, a sermon once a year during the Sanctity of Human Life month is not enough!! People are hurting! They are in desperate need of healing and they have no idea where to go because the church is silent. We have become so concerned with “offending” others that we have forgotten about how much our apathy offends God.

"If you are in a church where your pastor/priest actively speaks on the sanctity of human life, I encourage you to thank him, and thank him often. It is not easy, but it is right. If you are not hearing the message of abortion and healing from the pulpit, I strongly urge you to go to your pastor and ask why. Share why this is important to you. Share these statistics with them. Share your heart. Just because your pastor is silent doesn’t mean you have to be. Stand up for life. Stand up and speak up. Lives are depending on it. It is time for the church to STAND UP."

I am daily grateful that I left the ELCA in the 70s.We who are pro-life must continue the good fight with God's help.

You could be right, Janet, or it could be a bit earlier -- from the mind of Satan. It's interesting to note in the post about the church merger, that one of the reasons for the ELCA decline is not enough kids. I guess God is having the last laugh.

I have this memory of a social science teacher of mine in the past making this statement, "The most difficult change to make is a change within a culture". Infanticide has its origins within many a culture. It would seem that Christian leaders would want to address it.

If you are talking to me, Janet, I'm happy to tell you my thoughts. I was 28 in 1973, and I had given birth to a daughter. There was zero, none, nada doubt in my mind that Carolyn was Carolyn from the moment of conception.

You say "Christian leaders." The Catholic Church has fearlessly addressed the issue since the 1970s. This is reason #1 why the liberal media hates the Church, and tries to destroy it. Why do you think the priest sex abuse scandal had "legs" for 10+ years? There is the same percentage of sex abuse in every major institution -- public schools, etc., but it is not pursued.

We humans want to have all the sex we desire with no consequences. Pregnancy is a consequence. Do you notice in the sit coms people are always having sex, but in the next episode, no one is pregnant? This is what Hollywood wants. This is why they mercilessly attack the Catholic Church.

I could go on and on -- now about the "tissue issue." In CO there is an interesting legal case developing about whether the fetus is a "person"............
