Jesus Loves Me This I Know

Here is another example of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America's view of Scripture. It comes to us from Rev. Dr. Joelle Colville-Hanson, Director for Evangelical Mission for the Northeastern Iowa Synod. Rev. Coville-Hanson replied to a tweet which stated, “Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so.” Here is Rev. Coville-Hanson's response -

What was so wrong with the original tweet that this ELCA synod employee felt she needed to respond with a different answer? Is the Bible not the reason we all even know about Jesus?

The ELCA has been denying God's Word for decades. They have manipulated it, cast doubt on it, denied it and viewed much of it as myth. If this is the kind of view you have of the Bible then you are worshiping in the correct denomination. But if not, what are you doing remaining in the ELCA?

The Marcus Borg-adoring ELCA actually has a Director for Evangelical Mission? That position has to be a total sinecure. Confessional-Lutheran Gospel evangelism is haughtily disdained in the leadership echelons and institutions of the universalistic ELCA.

This 2013 St. Olaf College grad typifies the denomination's view of what "mission" work is: "For those of you who are unaware, accompaniment is the ELCA Young Adults in Global Mission buzz word. While my technical job title is missionary of the ELCA, I am not a traditional missionary. The job of the 60 YAGM scattered across the globe is to accompany — to walk with the people in our new communities, to share their sorrows, their victories…
We are not sent to fix, to change, or to rectify. We are sent to live, sent to grieve with our brothers and sisters, sent to find God in seemingly hopeless situations. We are sent to live, sent to dance with grandmothers and teetering toddlers, sent to witness God in all her splendor." Dr. Robert Benne writes [ "Lutheran Exceptionalism: From Hope to Decline"]:

". . . Increasingly the theology of Protestant liberalism crept in in three key areas—the nature of salvation itself; the decisiveness and uniqueness of Christ as Savior; and the familiar sexuality issues. One need do nothing to be saved, for God loves you unconditionally, just as you are, by virtue of your creation. Repentance and amendment of life are beside the point. Christianity and the other great religions are on different tracks to the same destination; evangelism is replaced by dialogue. Christian moral requirements in sexual life are outdated and need sharp revision. Inclusivism, universalism, and revisionism became the leit-motifs of the ELCA at its elite levels. Slowly they have filtered down to the parish level.

"The trouble is, such a lax vision hardly inspires one to become a serious member of the church.* If God loves you just the way you are and all will be saved, why bother? Enjoy cultural libertarianism rather than struggle with difficult moral standards. Join the quasi-religious social movements such as militant environmentalism directly rather than filter ones concerns through the church. So the young are drawn to the culture rather than the church. Alarmed intense believers go to other churches or join dissident Lutheran bodies. "The number of missionaries—especially ministers of the Gospel—have precipitously declined in both denominations [ELCA and ELCCanada]. African churches are breaking fellowship with them over sexuality issues. The ELCA’s most distinguished theologians—Robert Jenson, Carl Braaten, James Nestingen, David Yeago—are all now persona non grata within that church and are speaking writing in different churches and venues. The last mentioned, David Yeago, was released at the height of his career from Southern Lutheran Seminary, presumably for not being compliant enough with ELCA orthodoxy."

Rev. Coville-Hanson tweets: "Jesus loves me this I know cuz folks so love me told me so"

The absurdity of her tweet aside, am I the only one out here who doesn't understand her phrase: "... cuz folks so love me told me so"????? That doesn't make any sense. Did she perhaps mean to say "folks who love me"?

Her self-perceived cleverness is completely cancelled out by her apparent failure to proofread her own 14-word tweet, assuming that she is able to construct a coherent sentence at all. Let the reader be the judge. In addition to one glaring typo ("Wiscosnin"), her own blog bio reads: "I have two great kids in their 20s who are started out their own adventure, and like to take some credit for their awesomeness."

Then there's her incoherent followup tweet, which reads: "Jesus loves you this I know for the bible tells me so. Now you can sing 'for #ELCA Joelle told me so'"

Huh?!? What is she trying to say? Sing about "#ELCA Joelle" Who? Why? Is she suggesting that her authority, representing the ELCA, replace that of the Bible (which she chooses not to capitalize)?

She is a bizarre person and a horrible excuse for a so-called Christian pastor.
