ELCA Head Bishop Says the ELCA 'teaches that abortion...must be legal and accessible'

If you are prolife you need to stop supporting and end your membership in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). It is time to leave.

See the ELCA news release and the tweet below from the ELCA Presiding Bishop, Elizabeth Eaton, about the Supreme Court and their likely decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which would give states the right to decide on abortion.

The news release is a statement from the Presiding Bishop titled "A pastoral message on abortion." (See here) The tweet above is included in the ELCA news release. Here are some additional quotes from the statement:

I urge you to work locally to moderate any Supreme Court decision similar to the leaked draft.
This church's social teaching states that abortion must be legal, regulated and accessible. People who choose to have legal abortions should not be harassed or prevented from accessing abortion due to economic or other factors.
It has the potential to foster communities of conflict and moral policing rather than complex moral discernment. It will likely endanger or cause the deaths of people who need an abortion. And the legal bases established by any such decision threaten people's access to birth control, same-sex marriage, voting rights and their right to privacy.
Any ruling similar to the leaked draft will upend 50 years of legal precedent in our nation and damage the health and well-being of many.

I don't care what your reason is to remain in the ELCA, whether you are a pro-life pastor or a pro-life congregation or a pro-life member. You are part of a denomination that supports and advocates for the killing of unborn children (the ELCA also pays for employees' abortions). You can not justify remaining.

While the leaked court draft does not represent the Supreme Court's ruling in its final form; nevertheless, it contradicts this church's teaching. This church teaches that abortion and reproductive health care, including contraception, must be legal and accessible.

Elizabeth Eaton: "The leaked court draft . . . contradicts this church's teaching."

Jesus' response to the ELCA: "And so you cancel the word of God in order to hand down your own tradition. And this is only one example among many others.” [Mark 7:13]

James Lamb, former Executive Director of Lutherans for Life (the ELCA is, unsurprisingly, the only U.S. Lutheran denomination that is not a member of LFL), wrote:

". . .God speaks to some of the political issues of our day but in a way that gives the Christian plenty of 'wiggle' room. For example, God speaks about taxes. He tells us to give to 'Caesar' what is his.

"However, he does not talk about tax structures or the IRS. Therefore, Christians may debate about how much they think 'Caesar' should be taking or about how he should be taking it.

The "Moloch's work. Our hands." ELCA is like-minded kin to this church that also embraces abortion:

If the ELCA's embrace of Planned Parenthood and denominational endorsement of murder in utero were its ONLY godless apostasy, ELCA members would be Biblically mandated to flee this soulless denomination: "How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness?" [2 Cor. 6:14]
