Ivy Gauvin is an ELCA pastor at St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Bemus Point, New York. She writes that students were penalized if they used gendered names for God at her ELCA seminary.

Did the ELCA seminary professors issue scissors to students with instructions that they cut out every offending Bible reference by Jesus to His Father?

The first verses the hirelings probably ordered students to excise:
Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’ But you have not known Him. I know Him. If I were to say that I do not know Him, I would be a liar like you, but I do know Him and I keep His word." [John 8:54-5]

Nothing new under the sun! In 1998 while preparing / getting dressed for my first chapel at Trinity (Columbus OH) as a new "student", I was asked for my prayer petitions for the morning service. I was "told" that I could not use "Father" -- which I had used ONLY ONCE! But once was ONE TOO MANY! I informed her that I WOULD use FATHER! I was a 3rd career student -- been around the flagpole a few times, including 4 years with Campus Crusade, chapel assistant in the USAF, counselor at Promise Keepers.... and "they" had no basis for their so-called gender "teaching" from my understanding of scripture! Kind of like breaking horses (family farm/ranch) -- you got'a keep the reins tight from the moment you get on and let them know who's in charge... and even so, they'll still keep trying to throw you off! Happened all the way up to AND including graduation because I stood up to the deception and outright lies of the person in charge of internships. (4th yr internship, AND we locked horns!) Yep, if you do not abide by / conform to "their" teachings, social issues, agendas, etc. you are suspect and subject to their every attempt to buck you off! She failed to break me AND I did receive my diploma! IMO, seminarians without other healthy "outside" insights, support, and already developed critical thinking skills are potentially fair / easy game for an all too often very progressive/liberal closed-minded seminary staff/faculty.

Dear Lordy. I’ve been an LCMS member my entire life and remember clearly Seminex, being confirmed in the middle of it. We had an LCMS pastor that tried to have our congregation become a part of ELCA, and thanks to our elders it did not happen. It was one big giant mess and the membership suffered greatly, spreading members to other LCMS congregations throughout the area, ourselves included.

Membership of over 1,000 fell to about 200 in the late 1980’s and the replacement pastor wasn’t much better. Though a kind man on every level he just wasn’t strong enough for what was needed and efforts to replace him failed multiple times. New pastors simply weren’t prepared for the challenge and it was a revolving door of vicars. For 30 years the congregation faltered to the point of losing not only the school but nearly losing the physical church, an early 1900 gothic structure, now a historic landmark.

Like many, I strayed a bit after college having been heavily involved in youth group in my teens. Not in my beliefs, but by not participating (This from a guy who in his sophomore year of high school wanted to be a DCE, go figure). I just had “other” things that had become more important.

In the early 2000’s I was blessed with a wonderful bride from the Midwest and we now have a kiddo approaching confirmation. As a responsible Lutheran dad I dusted off the Book of Concord I had hadn’t read in three decades and I’m getting myself prepared for the barrage of questions about to come forth from said kiddo. In doing so I took to the web so I can have some answers for her that are bound to come up that Luther couldn’t foresee in our age. This is when I stumbled across your website.

I remember my grandmother telling me during Seminex that this was going to destroy the Lutheran Church in the United States. After seeing what has become of ELCA, she was nearly right. We now have ELCA’s heresies wrapped around our necks like an albatross. The uninformed think all Lutherans are the same as ELCA given that they are the ones making all the headlines every time they drift further away from the Bible with their disturbing worldly views. Look at those guys! They are conforming to our secular world! Fortunately LCMS and other Synods have managed to survive this nightmare, but not without cost.

We are now back at that very congregation. A place where my grandparents, my parents, my daughter and I myself were baptized. It’s almost surreal. A new pastor right out of Seminary has worked diligently the last 10 years, taking the congregation completely back in time. He is so old school that Luther himself could be leading our congregation, and I can’t believe he’s my age. The membership, in a big liberal shifting city, is back to where it once was (even at these numbers it’s kind of disappointing as there are more members at my wife’s congregation in the Midwest in a town of 15,000 and we live in a city of 3 million with 14 congregations. By God we’ll take it!).

His belief along the way? With Gods grace we can do this! The church does not have to change for the times! It needs to be restored to fight this cancer that is “modern” Christianity that is destroying the very foundation that God has built!

Thank you for this site and exposing the falsehoods of ELCA and assisting in the restoration of the Church. The second Reformation! People need to know what is going on with these misguided fools who deny Christ. They are NOT Christian or Lutheran, not by any stretch. We can only pray for them and hope that they will come to terms with what they have done, and undone.
