ELCA leaders are not happy.
Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton, "I encourage our congregations to use the resources of the ELCA Witness in Society Team with advocacy networks on the state and federal level. And get involved with AMMPARO, the ELCA’s strategy toward just and humane policies affecting migrants." "As a church, we are called to speak up when the government distorts or denies the image of God in each person by endangering access to protection, peace and daily bread. Where harm or inequity occur, we are called by God to respond with love and advocacy." "This church is committed to upholding the humanity of everyone, regardless of who we are or where we come from." (See here)
Letter by ELCA Region One Bishops:
"As people who have received God’s mercy and grace, we are called to extend that same mercy and grace to others. This means offering opportunities for new beginnings, particularly for those already present in the United States without legal documentation... We are called, as individuals and as a society, to remember that the immigrants among us are not intruders or enemies but bearers of the image of God, deserving of our care, respect, and advocacy." (See here) ELCA partner, Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, now called Global Refuge, has been issued a government stop-work order. This ELCA partner receives millions of dollars a year from the US government.
