ELCA head Lutheran bishop: Christian nationalists don’t think Lutherans are saved and only want Christians in office

I am a Christian who would love to see America get back to its religious roots. Does that make me a Christian nationalist? The new bogeyman of religious liberals is the “rising threat” of “white Christian nationalism.” I know alot of conservative Christians and not one has told me that Lutherans are not saved or that only Christians should hold office. But according to Elizabeth Eaton, head bishop of the liberal Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, that is what Christian nationalists believe. I doubt it
.
You will notice in the below video, Eaton talks about her non-Christian neighbors but not a hint of her sharing Christ with them. Eaton told a Chicago newspaper that, if Hell exists, she believes it is empty. It makes sense then that Eaton to my knowledge has never once talked about bringing lost people to Christ. But Eaton did go to the White Hoise to promote abortion rights.

"I thank you, Lord, that my Muslim neighbor, the ELCA and I are not like those other 'Christians' over there. . .My family served in WWI and WWII! I laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier! I am extraordinarily gracious when approached non-Christians! And if this doesn't justify my patriotism and my Christianity, I don't know what does! (Harrumph) Amen!"

Pastor Greg Laurie, whose church and worldwide ministry (harvest.org) are doing the Kingdom work the ELCA smugly refuses to do, calls out the hirelings in sellout churches:

. . ." Some preachers today offer weak, watered-down proclamations in the name of the gospel. They tell you to believe, but they don’t tell you to repent. They tell you there’s a Heaven, but they don’t tell you there’s a Hell. And they tell you there’s forgiveness, but they don’t tell you there’s repentance.

If we don’t include those things, then it isn’t the gospel. We cannot edit the gospel according to what we like or don’t like. It’s for us to share it as God gave it. Otherwise, we strip the gospel of its power and effectiveness.

We cannot control what happens in the world. But at the same time, we cannot allow the belief system of a secular society to influence the way we believe. The idea is not to conform ourselves to the world’s way of thinking. It is not to bend the Bible to the culture.

When we desperately want to please everyone and not offend anyone, we will fail to make an impact on our culture.

When we start tampering with the essentials of our faith, such as the Bible, the gospel, and the nature of God Himself, we are making God into a different image.

The God of the Bible does love us and accept us as we are. But the God of the Bible also wants to change us. He wants to conform us into the image of Jesus Christ."

Are Lutherans saved? Some are, some aren't. Let's look at the Bible, Martin Luther, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer for answers.

** John 1:12: "But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God..."
** John 14:6: "Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'"
** John 8:24: "...unless you believe that I [Jesus] am he [the Messiah], you will die in your sins.”
** 1 John 3:6 [Ampl.]: "No one who abides in Him [Jesus] [who remains united in fellowship with Him—deliberately, knowingly, and habitually] practices sin. No one who habitually sins has seen Him or known Him."

Does the ELCA preach that Jesus is the only way to salvation? Hardly.
** Former ELCA Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson's "An Open Letter to Jewish, Muslim, and Christian Leaders" [August 9, 2006] : "The one God whom we worship. . ."

** [Nadia] Bolz-Weber’s message [at the 2018 Youth Gathering] was a grace-centered address to teenagers she thought had a low self-image. It said nothing to those who needed a good dose of the law, which was absent from her talk. Absent, too, was Jesus as the bearer of God’s grace, who calls to repentance and discipleship in addition to conveying forgiveness and healing. The message that “few are chosen” was transmuted into a universal love that rescues everyone—including an unrepentant Harvey Weinstein and a “racist cop”—simply because they are created in the image of God. Martin Luther:

Martin Luther on John 14:1 — “…the Father commands the whole world to believe that Christ is God. No one should believe in any other person or accept any other way to know God than Christ…whoever tries to go around Christ won’t meet the true God…everything they do and believe is useless.” (LW, 24:23)

Martin Luther on John 3:4 — “These are plain but powerful words: ‘You must be born again’ (John 3:7). We have to pass from the birth of sin to the birth of righteousness. Otherwise, we will never go to heaven…Let these words stay as they are…Understand the simple meaning of these words the way they are usually read…You shouldn’t dare to reinterpret the Word of God your own way…The Scriptures should always be handled with reverence and respect.” (LW, 22:282)

Martin Luther on Galatians 3:26 — “Faith has made you righteous. Which faith? Faith in Christ…The book of John testifies to this: ‘Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.’ (John 1:12)” (LW, 26:351)

Martin Luther on 1 Peter 1:3 — “..we must preach about Jesus Christ, that he died and rose from the dead and why he died and was resurrected. We must preach so that the people will believe in him and through faith be saved. This is what it means to preach the true gospel. Any preaching that is different than this is not the gospel, no matter who preaches it.” (LW, 30:9)

Martin Luther on 1 John 3:4 — “We are all sinners, and at times we all fall into sin. But when true Christians fall, they soon come back, turn around, and struggle against the sin so that they won’t offend their neighbor…even if Christians are completely surrounded by sin, they should still fight against it. Some people think they’re Christians because they’ve been baptized. These people give their desires free rein and don’t care about conquering their sins. They merely follow their own cravings.” (LW, 30:269)

Dietrich Bonhoeffer: "Cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline, Communion without confession, absolution without personal confession. Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ, living and incarnate."

John Stonestreet and Shane Morris write: "If your god — however you define him, her, it, or they — never demands change, then your god is you. This is what progressive Christianity has largely become. And it’s why it’s dying. If God’s desires are indistinguishable from our own and His commands identical with the progressive social agenda — to the extent that you don’t even have to believe in Him to pastor a church — then we might as well all stay home on Sundays and listen to NPR."

White "Christian nationalists" do exist out there, though probably not in the numbers that liberals would claim. Either way, if the USA is a "Christian nation,"then this leaves open the question of what constitutes "Christianity" and who gets to decide?
