ELCA bishops call Trump's move to protect Christians "dangerous"

In recent years, Christian bakers and florists have been taken to court for not servicing homosexual weddings. President Trump desires to end these attacks on religious liberty, but Midwest bishops in the liberal Evangelical Lutheran Church in America believe this is “dangerous“ and a conflation of Christian fundamentalism with “Christian Nationalism”.

This reminds me of a few years ago when Elizabeth Eaton, head bishop of the ELCA, went to the White House to lobby for abortion rights. If you have any doubt that the ELCA is all about liberal politics, go to elca.org and hit “news“ and see political pronouncement after political pronouncement.

This is your ELCA offering dollars at work. Time and energy that should go to spreading the gospel of Christ are going elsewhere. The ELCA has shrunk 40 percent in membership since its founding in 1988, and it should.

Nothing upsets the devil's accomplices like actual Christians being Christians who exercise their First Amendment freedoms and testify boldly and publicly to the Gospel. There are no rebels in ELCA “leadership,” only compliant conformists to the world, to doctrines of demons, and to the tyranny of the flesh.

Adam Clarke, 19th century British theologian and biblical scholar, knew counterfeits like today's ELCA impastors:

“This is a striking feature of the city of London in the present day. The itch for news, which generally argues a worldly, shallow, or unsettled mind, is wonderfully prevalent: even ministers of the Gospel, negligent of their sacred function, are become in this sense Athenians [cf. Acts 17]; so that the book of God is neither read nor studied with half the avidity and spirit as a newspaper…It is no wonder if such become political preachers, and their sermons be no better than husks for swine. To such the hungry sheep look up, and are not fed.”

[ . . . ]However, in order for Christianity to appear enticing and less intrusive to our postmodern culture, difficult truths, including repentance, are minimized or avoided. The people advocating this approach fail to realize that repentance opens the line of communication between God and man. This is the lifeline for our dying world. It’s not our hold on God, but rather God’s hold on us that secures us.

The Fruit of Genuine Faith
Some even suggest that repentance is self-improvement, or a call to fulfill our natural potential. When we repent we do improve and our God-given potential becomes more apparent, but repentance is not about self-improvement — it’s about renouncing sin and turning from it.

Repentance is a change of mind that leads to a change in action. Brokenness, genuine sorrow over sin, and humility are marks of sincere repentance. Lasting hope and joy are also byproducts of a right relationship with God, beginning with “repentance.”

This is nothing to fear, but to cherish. There is always a link between genuine faith and sincere repentance. The truth about repentance will set you free — and it’s our only hope.
