Controversial Scholar Marcus Borg Prominent With ELCA 11/28/2011
                                                      2 Comments

Marcus Borg is not a name many laypersons would know, but he is very popular with the leadership of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.  Mr. Borg has spoken at many ELCA functions and his books are well read throughout the denomination.  But who is Marcus Borg?

Borg’s own website says, “Marcus J. Borg is Canon Theologian at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Portland, Oregon. Internationally known in both academic and church circles as a biblical and Jesus scholar. . .” (see here)  He is the author of nineteen books.  Mr. Borg is also a member of the Jesus Seminar, which has been described as “. . . a self-promoting, pretentious attempt to popularize a historical Jesus, which is more culturally appealing. While claiming to represent the mainstream of critical New Testament scholarship, the Seminar might be likened to a sideshow rather than the center-ring attraction.” (see here)

Marcus Borg is wildly popular with ELCA leadership, (which I will show you a little later in this blog) but first you should know what this man teaches and believes.  The best way to do that is by hearing it from the man himself.  Mr. Borg says:

“I let go of the notion that the Bible is a divine product. I learned that it is a human cultural product . . . As such, it contained their understandings and affirmations, not statements coming directly or somewhat directly from God"

"Seminary also introduced me to the historical study of Jesus and Christian origins. I learned from my professors and the readings they assigned that Jesus almost certainly was not born of a virgin, did not think of himself as the Son of God, and did not see his purpose as dying for the sins of the world"

"I cannot believe that God could have stopped the Holocaust but chose not to, just as I cannot believe that God responds to some prayers for healing and protection and not others...It is difficult to believe in such a God"

"The pre-Easter Jesus is the historical Jesus...The post-Easter Jesus is what Jesus became after his death. More specifically, the post-Easter Jesus is the Jesus of Christian tradition and experience..."

"Was the pre-Easter Jesus divine? NO...Is the post-Easter Jesus divine? Yes--the post-Easter Jesus of Christian experience and fully developed Christian doctrine is divine"

"As such, myths can be both true and powerful, even though they are symbolic narratives and not straightforward historical reports. Though not literally true, they can be really true; though not factually true, they can be actually true. The stories of Jesus' birth are myths in this sense. Along with most mainline scholars, I do not think these stories report what happened. The virginal conception, the star, the wise men, the birth in Bethlehem where there was no room in the inn, and so forth are not facts of history. But I think these stories are powerfully true...The stories of Jesus' death and resurrection contain a mixture of historical memory and mythical narration."
                                                      (read here)

Wow!!  It’s hard to believe that a leader in mainline Christianity can hold these beliefs.  But amazingly, the same things Borg says in these quotes are beliefs that are growing by leaps and bounds in the ELCA.

Pastor John Bent and Pastor Ralph Boyer have this to say about Borg and the Jesus Seminar, in which he is part of:
“Marcus Borg, the professor referred to in Bishop Hanson’s Report . . . was a primary member of the Jesus Seminar. The Jesus Seminar was the group of scholars who concluded that only 18% of the words attributed to Jesus in the Gospels were probably spoken by him. Things like the miracles of Jesus and the physical reality of Christ’s resurrection are dismissed as the words of ancient people who misunderstood what happened.

Scholars like Marcus Borg would say that they take the Bible seriously, but they do so in a very different way than Christians have for 2000 years, ways that discount many of the basic beliefs of Christianity and the life of Christ. Once you do that, questions of sexuality (and whatever issues come next) are no longer decided on the basis of Scripture, but on the basis of the powerful voices of the culture around us.”  (read here)

This man, Marcus Borg, whose views are about as heretical as you can get, is a very respected scholar and highly sought after speaker by the ELCA leadership.  Let me show you:

Do I need to list more?  I could.  If you do a google search on  “elca” “marcus borg” you will come up with many more events and connections.  Here is one more example and one person’s related "letter to the editor" of the publication.

ELCA publication “Lutheran Partners” reviews Living the Questions 2.0 video series in which Marcus Borg is one of the contributors. (see here)

To which a letter to the editor responded:

“Geoffrey Scott's recent review and implied recommendation of the Living the Questions 2.0 education materials greatly alarms me. Once more I am left wondering if the ordained and lay leaders of the ELCA truly have any real partnership in the gospel together.

The Living the Questions curriculum is linked to the so-called "progressive Christianity" movement. The eight primary tenets of this ecumenical, loose affiliation of mainline Protestant congregations include the belief that all faiths lead to God apart from the unique atoning work of Jesus Christ in his life, death, and resurrection; that the unbaptized should be admitted to communion; and that the historic, biblical doctrines of Christianity are, in large part, no longer helpful or necessary. This "progressive Christianity" therefore stands in direct opposition to apostolic Christianity.

Moreover, among the authors of the Living the Questions materials are John Spong, Marcus Borg, and John Crossan. All three deny the bodily resurrection of Jesus and denounce many of the basic, creedal core beliefs of Lutheran Christianity and historic Christianity in general. Living the Questions presents a different gospel than the gospel of Jesus Christ, proclaimed in Scripture.

What then are we to make of the endorsement Lutheran Partners gives to this curriculum — indeed, to this heretical teaching? It leaves me to surmise that the key leaders of the ELCA would have local pastors and educators incorporate these materials into their teaching and education ministries. I can think of hardly anything worse.

As the Lord says to us, "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves" (Matthew 7:15). Living the Questions is another example of that wolf. And such a wolf, if left unchecked, will eventually consume the whole flock.”  (see here)

Why is Marcus Borg allowed to speak and teach at so many ELCA functions?  Why are his books being used and promoted in the ELCA?  It is because Marcus Borg’s teachings resonate with the leadership of the ELCA.

There has been a lot of talk and publicity on the idolatry and goddess worship happening at the ELCA church, Ebenezer Lutheran, in San Francisco (otherwise known as “herchurch”).  If you haven't seen it yet please check out what is happening at their November conference (see here and here).  Of great importance is the fact that the ELCA Office of the Presiding Bishop is being represented at the conference and that person will be speaking.  Since this is an important topic, I thought I would share with you some more information about this conference and the ELCA pastor responsible for it.

First, I came across a blog discussing “herchurch’s” 2009 conference.  This comes from the perspective of one of the conference speakers.  She says:

“I was very, very surprised at the feeling of singing words of love and praise to the Sacred Feminine in hymn tunes which were already familiar.”

“A rich and wonderful conference such as this with the title ‘Marys, Madonnas, Goddess-with-Us’ wouldn’t be complete without small group workshops for integrating sacred feminine spirituality through creative artwork or conversations with presenters, or more meditation and chanting. . . I kept seeing people walking around with Goddess dolls, wands really, that were magical and potent and strong in color and feeling. It turned out they were from a workshop given by the artist Linda Roberts. They were personal creations that each creator seemed to be in love with, and I’m sure they will grace many home altars.”

“Once we understand that Mary Magdalene is the voice of the Goddess Herself in Christianity, it becomes very interesting to learn her symbolic language so we can hear her better in our own dreamworld and artwork.”

“It was a very full weekend; full of love, full of respect for Rev. Stacy Boorn and her courage within Christianity, and full of secret hopes for the religious changes we need to support ‘the New Creation’ we all want.” (see here)

Now let’s hear from the woman who is responsible for this yearly conference,  “herchurch” pastor Stacy Boorn (ELCA).

Toward the beginning of the interview Pastor Boorn talked about the people’s reaction to her church’s name, “herchurch”:
“. . . when we posted that on the front of the church, people would drive by and then identified the congregation as “herchurch,” knowing what we meant the deity was “her.”

The interviewer, soon after, asked about referring to goddess as “holy other.” Rev. Boorn, in her response said, “ . . . but ‘holy other’ also gives a sense of tie, I think with many religions’ traditions.”

Here are some more statements made by Rev. Boorn from that interview:

“. . . but way beyond the writing of those scriptures (the Bible) the wonderful work that we’ve tied into was Maria (inadible) Buddhist and others who showed us that for tens, and tens, and tens of thousands of years that there have been women leading societies, and goddess the head of that, and they produced peace communities . . .”

“For example, you know we have a Wednesday evening goddess rosary which is a ritual that we’ve developed . . . in a very similar way to a ritual of the Anglican or the Roman Catholic prayer beads but with a more intentional liberation connectiveness to the holy mother, goddess of us all. And so for some, people will pray prayers envisioning an actual in the womb or the Earth as the body of the 'holy other' or the cosmos as the mother so it is wide open and I think that is the important part of it.  On this journey with ‘she who is,’ there are many voices in the feminist religious world who have various takes, and I think it is important in what we do in this ritual community is to listen and use them all for our richness.”

“. . . we have in our communion at the goddess rosary, some persons who, when we talk about ‘mother, maiden, crone,” as a symbol or metaphor for the 'holy other,' there will be some in our community who will actually name three goddess, Isis and others . . .”

“The day is coming, I hope, when the patriarchal religious traditions are totally dismantled and something new comes forth and I think the feminists are going to make that happen.”

“Hopefully our congregation will not be just one but one of many.  And when we can be a model for others we are grateful to do that.” (listen here)

This goddess worshipping church, supported by the ELCA leadership wants to be a model for other churches.  Their pastor wants to see feminist goddess worship dismantle and replace historical Christianity worldwide.

We cannot say  “well this is just one church.”  Not when this church has been supported and protected for years by the ELCA leadership.  Not when the ELCA Office of the Presiding Bishop is represented at their goddess worshipping conference.  The ELCA leadership is moving the denomination in this same direction.  I know I do not want to be part of a denomination that encourages the worship of demons and pagan gods.

Lutheran Woman Today, a publication of Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, published an article in their June 2011 magazine called “Holden Together.”  In the article we are told about a retreat and Bible study where ELCA pastor, Matt Larson, taught on Genesis 1, 2 and 3.  The pastor did not teach the traditional historical understanding that Moses wrote these chapters, instead it was “Yahwists” and priests.  The take-away message of this Bible study on creation and Adam and Eve was, “(j)ust because it’s not real doesn’t mean it’s not true.” (link to the article)

The article earlier stated, “(w)hen asked to describe the creation story, members of our group offered similar words: allegory, symbolic, myth, parable.”

Here is an ELCA affiliated magazine promoting the denial of the words of the Bible and make no mistake, it is also teaching their readers that they can not trust that what the Bible says is true.

In the same article about the retreat, a Methodist preacher spoke to the group, the author tells us “he excoriated America for ‘raining down fire’ on the Middle East and called for forgiveness and reconciliation in our foreign relations.”

This is so typical, many leaders in the ELCA and the mainline denominations that it is
full communion with, blame America, hate on Jews and deny Scripture.

David Lose, The Marbury E. Anderson Professor of Biblical Preaching at Luther Seminary, recently spoke on a podcast entitled, “What is the Bible?”

During the podcast he said this about the Bible,
“(i)t is this collection of stuff, all kinds of stuff from all over the place that have been passed down and put together and sometimes edited and changed . . .” (listen here)

Prof. Lose is stating a standard teaching theory in the ELCA called Redaction Criticism.

“Redaction Criticism of the Bible is the theory that different copyists and commentators of the early biblical writings embellished and altered the biblical texts throughout early Jewish and Christian history to make them appear more miraculous, inspirational, and legitimate. An example of redaction theory would be the claim that Old Testament prophecies were modified by redactors after the fact to make them appear as miraculous prophecies. Redaction criticism reduces the quality of the biblical record, casts strong doubt on its inspiration, and implies that the Bible is not trustworthy as a historical document." (read here)

And one wonders how the ELCA can make policies and take positions that are completely contrary to what God tells us in scripture?  It's because many leaders in the ELCA have very little regard for it.

Gospel Reductionism and Antinomianism are troubling views and are growing more prominent within the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

Gospel Reductionism is "the tendency to reduce the Bible to the gospel.  Gospel reductionism tends to allow the Bible authority only in matters which are explicitly part of the gospel or may be developed from the gospel.  Exponents of gospel reductionism believe that considerable freedom should be allowed within the church in matters which are not an explicit part of the gospel.  In this way, the rest of the Bible is relativised; it does not have the same authority.  Instead of the gospel and scripture, the tendency is for only the gospel to become the standard (the norm) of Christian teaching."  (read here)

Antinomianism is defined as "(t)he doctrine or belief that the Gospel frees Christians from required obedience to any law, whether scriptural, civil, or moral, and that salvation is attained solely through faith and the gift of divine grace."  (read here)

ELCA Professor Ralph W. Klein is Christ Seminary-Seminex professor of Old Testament at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago.  (see here)

In an essay called “Reading the Bible as Lutherans in the Twenty-First Century” (read entire essay here)  Professor Klein shares with us some of his views on Scripture.  He says,

“Our liturgical customs send out uncertain and potentially misleading affirmations about this “Word of God.” When we say at the end of the first or second readings, ‘The Word of the Lord,’ we are stating at best an incomplete truth. For these words just read, however much guided by the Spirit, are also written or spoken by finite men and women, children of their times, with their own limits, presuppositions and even biases, and they addressed the people and the questions of their own times.”

“. . . much of the Bible could be described as (very helpful) words about God rather than ‘the Word of God.’’’

“The affirmation of the gospel, which our predecessors referred to as the material principle, is finally what gives the Scriptures their authority.”

“The canon itself, finally, is not nearly so important for us Lutherans, as what many of the canonical books contain.”  (Canon is defined as “the books of the Bible.”)

“As I read various Lutheran essays in preparation for this address, I was often struck by how clear the essays were about the central, gospel-based authority of Scripture and how ambiguous they were when talking about the Bible’s authority on other matters . . .”

“Part of a Lutheran approach to hermeneutics that locates the authority of the Scriptures in their central saving message means that at times we must accept the possibility that a position taken by a biblical writer is wrong or unhelpful.”

Professor Klein doesn’t seem to think God was involved in the writing of the Bible.  Scripture says,

"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." - 2 Timothy 3:16-17

“This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.” - 1 Corinthians 2:13

You choose who you want to believe.

The ELCA teaches an interesting, non-orthodox view of Jesus' resurrection.  Gnesio, an online magazine of Lutheran theology, writes:

The resurrection for the ELCA does not necessarily have to be a historic event, but something of faith. From their website: “All of this has led some scholars to write that the risen Jesus (and apparitions of the risen Jesus) is a supernatural reality which does not belong to this world and cannot be the object of historic investigation. Rather, Jesus’ resurrection is an object of faith.

Accordingly, ELCA members believe that what history does is to demonstrate the disciples’ faith in the resurrection. Their witness and testimony to Jesus’ post-death appearances make it abundantly clear that the resurrection was a primary object of the apostolic proclamation from Christianity’s very beginning.”

This view then means that it is not important whether Jesus is still dead in a tomb or not, just that you believe that He rose.

Mark C. Chavez, director of Lutheran CORE, writes of  leadership in the ELCA that follow a Liberal Protestant (LP) theology.  An “LP says that resurrection is spiritual or metaphorical, not physical, and LP often asserts that the apostles created a myth to cope with the tragic loss of their leader.”  (read here)

I guess denying what the Bible says gets easier and easier in the ELCA, the more you do it.

Many ELCA members are asking how their denomination can allow and accept teachings that go against clear Biblical doctrine on such things as salvation in Jesus for those that believe (John 3:16) and homosexuality.

In order to better understand how the ELCA got to this point, one needs to analyze what the ELCA leadership believes and ELCA seminaries teach about Scripture.  There are many things we could talk about here, but for now we will focus on the ELCA using the critical method of "Redaction Criticism" for studying and understanding the Bible. (read here - this link has now been removed by the ELCA, check out this link for more information on the ELCA and redaction criticism)

                                                      What is Redaction Criticism?

Redaction Criticism of the Bible is the theory that different copyists and commentators of the early biblical writings embellished and altered the biblical texts throughout early Jewish and Christian history to make them appear more miraculous, inspirational, and legitimate.

This method allows the leadership in the ELCA to discount prophecies and miracles, among other things.   It also allows the belief that the Biblical authors embellished, exaggerated and, in other words, lied about things they wrote about.  Is there any wonder why the ELCA, in their words, actions and policies, discount what God says in Scripture to entertain their worldly, human wishes and desires?

Redaction Criticism is one cause of the ELCA's eroding belief that all Scripture is from God, that it is timeless and that it's true.

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.  2 Timothy 3:16-17

Rev. Tim Singleton is a ELCA pastor at New Horizons Lutheran Church in Falcon, CO.  You may remember him from an previous article on Exposing the ELCA. (see here)

Rev. Singleton calls himself a Trinitarian Universalist.  In a recent blog he explained, in detail, his thoughts on salvation.  He said,

"I am convinced. . . that the Spirit of Christ is present within all compassionate faiths.

A rose by any other name is still a rose; and Christ by any other name is still Christ. Christians say Christ, Buddhists say Buddha, Hindus say Krishna, and so on — different names for the same Spiritual Reality revealed through different languages and cultures.  Furthermore, God by any other name is still God.  Jews say Hashem (Yahweh), Christians say Trinity, Muslims say Allah, Buddhists say Nirvana, Hindus say Brahma, Native Americans say Great Spirit, and Boy Scouts say Great Scout Master.  These are different ways of addressing the Ultimate One, articulated through different languages and cultures — but God is God nonetheless." (read more of his blog here)

Rev. Singleton words are strikingly similar to comments made by ELCA Bishop Robert Rimbo of the Metropolitan New York Synod.  He recently said, "We commend ourselves to the reliable and merciful arms of the God of Abraham, the God whom Jesus calls Abba, the God whom Muslims and Christians in various parts of the world call Allah. This God promises a reign in which all shall be well." (read here)

Rev. Singleton and Bishop Rimbo's opinion here is not Biblical.  God clearly shows in Scripture that He is not the  god of other religions.  I Kings 18:21 says, "Elijah went before the people and said, 'How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.'"  If you keep reading this chapter in I Kings you will find out that Elijah, the prophet of God, had the prophets of Baal killed.  That is not an action a "god of all religions, just called by different names" would take.

II Kings 17: 35-39 says, "When the LORD made a covenant with the Israelites, he commanded them: 'Do not worship any other gods or bow down to them, serve them or sacrifice to them.  But the LORD, who brought you up out of Egypt with mighty power and outstretched arm, is the one you must worship. To him you shall bow down and to him offer sacrifices.  You must always be careful to keep the decrees and ordinances, the laws and commands he wrote for you. Do not worship other gods.  Do not forget the covenant I have made with you, and do not worship other gods.  Rather, worship the LORD your God; it is he who will deliver you from the hand of all your enemies.'"

God clearly tells us in His Scripture that He alone is to be worshipped (see Exodus 20:2-3).  For the ELCA to allow and Rev. Singleton to say that the Father/Son/Holy Spirit is the same as the gods of other religions is heresy!

The ELCA is putting the souls of billions of people at risk by teaching and encouraging universalism.

Check out what Lord of the Mountain Lutheran Church (ELCA church located in Dillon, Colorado) has to say on their website,

                                                      "LOTM MISSION STATEMENT
In the spirit of the Reformation, Lord of the Mountains Lutheran Church continually seeks meaningful ways
of expressing our commitment to the life and teaching of Jesus.

                                                      We do this by...
*welcoming all people to full participation in our community of faith.
*Recognizing there are other ways to God than just our way."
                                                      (find here)

If you didn't catch that, Lord of the Mountain's Pastor, Joseph Holub says this on his own website,

"1.  I affirm that Jesus Christ is the emergence of God's ongoing gracious presence in the world, and that through Jesus relationship with God is experienced.  Jesus is a doorway into the mystery of God."  (find here - click on "Joe.")

"Jesus is A doorway."  "There are other ways to God."

So the belief that all paths lead to God is OK according to the ELCA?  We see the ELCA teaching universal salvation, which has a very similar result. (read here)  Allowance of this teaching means acceptance, in my view.

For what it's worth, I also found these statements by Lord of the Mountain's Pastor, noteworthy.

"Since The Enlightenment especially, but even long before that Christianity has been preoccupied with doctrine – faith defined as a set of right beliefs.  Christianity is spoiled, grossly distorted and loses its heart when it is turned into a set of correct doctrines that I must accept or else.   I mean read the Apostle's Creed.  There's nothing much there that really stirs the soul and lights a fire in one's heart. There's nothing there about loving one's neighbor or enemy or anybody else.  Doctrines and correct beliefs don’t make disciples but eventually turn us into narrow and intolerant fanatics.  Jesus is not a doctrine.  He is the expression of compassion and radical inclusive love who invites us to follow him on an adventure called discipleship that just may cost us our lives as we give ourselves away in the pursuit of love, compassion and justice.  He calls us beyond the narrow boundaries behind which we protect and isolate ourselves from others.  What Jesus asks for is our faith defined as trust and commitment in his way of loving and living.  Unfortunately somewhere along the line being Christian came to mean accepting beliefs about Jesus rather than actually following Jesus." (read here, click on "blog" and go about 3/4 down the page to a heading called "The Deficiency of Doctrine.")
